LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In this course, you will learn about Loving Kindness and other Brahma Vihara Meditations and their benefits. Particularly, you will learn how to use the Brahma Viharas as to support and catalyze your already established meditation practice, and how to practice the Brahma Viharas in daily life. Furthermore it will be explained how love/friendliness helps you progress more quickly and smoothly and also elicit and deal with the purifications on the path. Though focused on the Brahma Viharas specifically, there will be time for questions and discussion of general meditation practice questions, as well.

SCHEDULE

Wk. 1 Introduction to cultivating Friendliness and Love on the Path

Metta Meditation, rewards & benefits of heart based practices

Practice Homework

• 30 min. daily sitting: Metta

 

Wk. 2 Compassion Meditation (Karuna)

Practice Homework

• 30 min. daily sitting: Compassion Meditation

 

Wk. 3 Joy at the Good Fortune of others (Mudita, Sympathetic Joy)

Practice Homework

• 30 min Mudita Practice

 

Wk. 4 Equanimity (Upekkha)

Practice Homework

• 30 mins Eq practice

 

Wk. 5 Tong Len (Taking and Sending, Exchange)

Practice Homework

• 30 Min Tong Len

 

 

SCHEDULE COMMON TO EACH CLASS:

5 mins of meditation

5 mins brief review of the prior class (first class will be introductions instead)

20 mins practice questions relating to last weeks material

15 mins lecture of new practice (first Metta, then Karuna, Mudita, Upekkha, Tong Len etc)

5 mins brief clarifications as to the technique

20 mins guided meditation for technique just discussed

20 mins follow up questions and homework assignment.

 

We’ll meet on Zoom. The class will last for 90 mins.

Also, feel free to forward this info to anyone else who is interested in Metta meditation and related practices.

 

It’s recommended to come to all classes. But, it’s no big deal if you miss one and then pick up the next class.


Practice prerequisites: meditate daily at least 30 mins a day 5 days a week for the past 6 months. This is an intermediate course so a little bit of meditation background is best.

 

About the teacher:  

Been meditating for 14 years, 6000 hrs of formal meditation, 250 days on silent meditation retreat. Traditions practiced in: Pragmatic Dharma/Mahasi style noting, Zen, Advaita Vedanta, Goenka Vipassana, Metta, and increasingly the Tibetan tradition.
