Overview

Going beyond the deceptively simple definition of “thinking about thinking”, mentalizing is the way that we make meaning of the world, ourselves, and our interactions with others. It is a factor crucial to development in areas as diverse as spiritual growth, interpersonal relationships, self-knowledge, psychological healing, setting goals, and finding purpose in life. This skill can be trained!

In this weekend retreat we will be offering an array of teachings and practices to take you through various aspects of mentalizing and learn how to apply them to improve your life. As mentalizing contains many relational aspects, social meditation practices will be offered as well.

The majority of the practices taught will be specific “Vipassana Noting” techniques that help us develop certain core mentalizing skills. Most meditation sessions can be done in dyad or solo.

Guided group Ideal Parent Figure Protocol will be offered.

For Beginners

– We will be offering a 45 minute introduction to Shinzen Young’s “See Hear Feel” for beginning meditators before the official start time on Friday.

Walking Meditation

Brief walking meditation instruction will be offered. Every two hour block will include a 20 or 30 minute walking meditation period.

Yoga (optional)

Cedric will guide an hour long Yoga session on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The Yoga routine will be made up of two sequences. The first is based on the “how to grow a lotus” sequence which is specifically designed to help with long meditation sitting. The second sequence is Tibetan Sun Moon Yoga which supports deep meditative experience.

Teachers: Evan Leed and Cedric Reeves.

The class will be recorded and will be available after the course is done. We’ll meet using the online video-call software Zoom.

He also has a deep interest in psychology and both Buddhist and continental philosophy, having studied these topics for thousands of hours in both formal and informal settings. Since 2018, he has been studying attachment theory and meditation with George Haas of Mettagroup and has been authorized to teach Dr. Daniel P. Brown’s Three Pillars Model of attachment repair, of which mentalization is a fundamental component, under George’s supervision. He also recently completed the five-month Social Noting Facilitator training through Buddhist Geeks.

Cedric Reeves has been meditating for the past 15 years with over 300 days on retreat.  Practice traditions include pragmatic Dharma, Zen, Advaita etc.

It’s recommended to come to all classes. But, it’s no big deal if you miss one and then pick up the next class.
